I dreamed a dream – for my mom

If you’re ever thinking about trying something new, but you need an extra push from someone who believes anything is possible, go talk to my mom. She has enough ambition for me, for you, and to spare. She is faith and hope personified.

Not only does my mom love me, but she believes in me.

When I told her I wanted to be a painter, she told me that I should start taking classes that semester. The paintings I made in college are still proudly hanging in her garage, a testimony to her belief that I’m a talented artist.

When I called her halfway through college to tell her I wanted to switch my major to English, she encouraged me and told me that I needed to study something I loved, and that I wrote beautifully.

The other day after watching Juventud de la Promesa, I texted my mom that it made me want to learn to dance. She told me (the most uncoordinated person I know, who also has the least amount of rhythm) that there’s no time like the present to try something new.

The world would be a better place if everyone had someone who believes in them like my mom believes in me.

Today is her birthday, so I thought I would dream a dream.

I dream that I can one day inspire someone like she has inspired me. I dream that I can encourage someone who needs a little extra hope. I dream that I can one day make my kids believe that they are brave, strong, and special, like she has made me feel. I dream that I will one day become all the things she already believes I am.

thoughts on contentment

Fall always seems to go by way too fast, so I’m trying to hold on to the piles of yellow leaves everywhere because they will be piles of snow soon. Living in Logan has made me really appreciative of seasons. They do so much more than just give variety to the years. I haven’t always been grateful for this season of our lives, but this season in our marriage is the best.

Sometimes it feels like most of our interaction during the week is texting each other “I miss you” over and over again while Tyson’s at school and I’m at work. Coming home to him always feels like a celebration, and I hope we always rush home to each other. My favorite part of the day is whenever we are together.

Tyson’s currently taking a class that requires no facial hair. Since he knows I love his beard, he woke me up yesterday so I could “kiss the beard goodbye.” I just about died because that’s the sweetest thing ever.

Can we always love each other this much (or way more)?

Five Things I Love Lately

  • Movie: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 12.51.17 AM

I have to admit that I ugly cried while watching this movie. I think the last time I cried this hard during a movie was when I watched A Walk to Remember. (In my defense, I was thirteen.) Even though it’s super sad, it’s not depressing because it’s such a good story and really well made.

  • Movie: The Peanuts Movie

Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 12.52.16 AM

I didn’t have super high expectations for this movie, but I loved it! I was worried that it would just try to capitalize on the Peanuts characters without having any sort of plot, but it wasn’t like that at all. They blended the classic Peanuts one dimensional style with the modern three dimensional style really well. And the message was super sweet.

  • Book: Eleanor & Park

Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 12.53.10 AM

I’m on a YA kick lately, and this has been my most recent favorite YA book. It’s so touching, and reminiscent of young love without being annoying about it. The language is so beautiful, and the story was really captivating as well.

  • Music: Blind Pilot Pandora

Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 12.53.52 AM

Remember Pandora? It was all the rage before Spotify. This station is my go-to background music while I’m writing. Think sad folksy songs with lots of guitars.

  • Product: Carmex Moisture Plus Lip Balm

Something about living in Logan during the winter makes me dry out like a prune, so Carmex is a must. This tube is skinny jeans pocket friendly, which is a huge plus.

This post is not sponsored by anyone, so all views are of course my own.

Is this what it’s like to have a lifestyle blog? Because I could get used to this : )

summer photos I almost forgot about

We had our first snow of the season yesterday and I was so shocked that I don’t even have any cellphone quality pictures to show for it. If your hair freezing because you forgot to wear a hood doesn’t sway you on your opinions about summer, then nothing will. I have to admit that I miss summer just a little bit.

Even though I probably spend way too much time on my phone, I’m so glad I’m able to take pictures quickly and then look back at them when I’m freezing. Short sleeves and flip flops. What are those? At least I have my phone to remind me. Without my phone, I might have forgotten that we did anything besides go to California this summer. I also may have never realized that I’m always wearing the same clothes.

We kicked off the summer by getting shaved ice. Tyson proved that he’s always ready for a picture. (I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to get a bad picture of him.) Me? Not so much. At least my shaved ice looks good.

Drank all the Dirty Diet Cokes I could get my hands on. IMG_3106

Regretted these potatoes shortly after this picture was taken.IMG_3681

Admired that sunset while Tyson admired those potatoes pre-regret.IMG_3682

Tyson saw one of his favorite planes while it was flying over us on the one day he didn’t have his camera. Side note: Please tell me how it’s fair that Tyson can pretty much see Pluto with his bare eyes and I can barely see an exit sign as I’m passing it without my glasses. Anyway, I was like, “Fear not! Iphone camera to the rescue.” IMG_3695

Spent too much money and not enough time at Target. This was after I was in my second hour of attempting to smell every candle in the home decor section. IMG_3713

Went to the Payson temple. I love having so many temples nearby. IMG_3820

Went to the Idaho State Fair. Tried a Tiger Ear for the first time. Gained ten pounds. IMG_4376 (1)

Played in some sunflower fields. Tyson’s convinced these sunflowers are his doing from when he put sunflower seeds in the bird feeder. IMG_3864

Proved we would do anything for free Chickfila. IMG_3873

Went to the Rexburg temple. Idaho’s kind of charming sometimes. IMG_3878

I cut and dyed my hair. Only cried about it twelve times. IMG_3922

Tyson won all the awards at the fair. He is the special! IMG_4042

Wore all the patterns at the fair. (My shoes had polka dots.)IMG_4050

Drank some gold Diet Coke at BYU Ed week. Took twenty pages of notes. IMG_4213

Went to the Lagoon for fourteen hours. I read while Tyson and my sister went on every single ride. We did go on the Tilt A Whirl like eight times per my request. Love me some Tilt A Whirl. IMG_4288

Long live summer!

Halloween 2015

Happy Halloween from a panda and a zookeeper!

I’m convinced I fall more and more in love with holidays every year.

This was our third Halloween in Logan, and we celebrated by buying candy with the hope that if we bought it, they would come. We finally got some trick or treaters around 9 pm, but I was bedridden with a migraine, so I didn’t open the door for them. Our apartment is probably blacklisted now, and we’ll never get trick or treaters again : \.

After the trick or treaters had come and gone, Tyson came home and we watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown like we do every year on Halloween. I love the little traditions we’ve started together… and how often Tyson quotes Charlie Brown.
