Anyone who knows Tyson knows he’s kind of a train fanatic. He follows multiple train blogs, and says that the epitome of luxury is owning your private train car. (One day!)
When he heard that one of the legendary Big Boy trains was passing through Salt Lake on its way to getting extensive renovations in Wyoming, he said we had to be there.
I’m always up for a Salt Lake (Target and In N Out) trip, so we drove down from Logan after work on a Friday. The train was scheduled to arrive in Salt Lake at 7:30, and that’s about the time we got there. When we got to the tracks, there were already groups of people there, all waiting to see this train. The train was running behind, so we booked it to In N Out and ate in the car while waiting.
We waited, waited, and waited. After about two hours of waiting, we decided to cut our losses and go to Target and then back to my brother’s place where we were spending the night.
The next morning, Tyson’s hopes and dreams were finally realized when he got to see a real Big Boy:
I felt out of place, like I usually do at these train events since I’m not a World War II veteran or a toddler. We will probably spend years of our lives sweating at train stations together, but I don’t mind. If he’s happy, I’m happy.
